The City of Tracy is happy to celebrate Park and Recreation Month with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) as an opportunity to recognize the power parks and recreation opportunities have in Tracy. This year, the NRPA’s theme is “Where Community Grows,” directing attention to bringing people together to foster goodwill and growth in communities nationwide. Businesses can use the NRPA 2023 Park and Recreation Month Toolkit to promote activities in Tracy.

Why we celebrate Parks and Recreation Month

As a community, Tracy understands the vital role parks and recreation play in our community. They are essential for residents’ high quality of life and enjoyment and for new families looking for a place to live. Parks and recreation can also serve as an economic driver. When people visit our community to play at a park, participate in a tournament or use our recreation facilities, they often spend money locally as they shop, eat at restaurants, and fill up their vehicles with gas, creating jobs and other local benefits.

Community growth

There are many ways individuals can spread the word during Parks and Recreation Month. Share posts about our parks and recreation on social media. Invite friends to visit, leave positive reviews on your favorite social media platform and become an ambassador for our community.

The Tracy City Council unanimously adopted the Citywide Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan in October 2022 and details the City’s plans to increase the currently existing 95 playgrounds, 99 group shade or picnic areas, nine climbing walls/rocks, six skate elements, six water play areas, two roller hockey rinks, one swimming pool, one dog park. The park system includes 85 parks encompassing 364 acres with 23 miles of multi-use trails and 16 miles of walking paths throughout the city.

Here are a few recreation opportunities to see and talk about.

Multi-Generational Recreation Center

The City Council declared El Pescadero Park the site for an approximately 52,000 Multi-Generational Recreation Center, which will include a three-court gymnasium, an indoor running track, a bouldering wall, multi-purpose rooms, teen/tech space, a kitchen, an outdoor courtyard, park improvements and much more. Construction is expected to begin in 2024.

Fun in the water

Float into summer and stop by the Joe Wilson Pool this summer season!  The Joe Wilson Pool offers a variety of programs and activities for participants of all skill levels and ages.  Families can enjoy an afternoon attending recreational swim, participating in a swim class, or watching a movie under the stars at a Dive-In Movie Event. The fun doesn’t stop there!  Test your strength and drop in for a water exercise class, or our active adults over 50 can quietly enjoy the pool to swim and stretch their muscles during the Active Adult 50+ Swim Program offered on Sundays. New this summer are Teen Only Pool Nights. We will have three themed pool nights; a Dive In Movie and a throwback-themed Retro Night. These nights will be full of fun for teens with a DJ, games, food trucks, and prizes!

Tracy’s parks have three splash pads, two misters and the Joe Wilson Pool. While the pool is temporarily closed for repairs, it will shortly be available for swim lessons, exercise classes and other programs.

Community Events

Summertime traditions continue in the heart of Downtown Tracy by exciting Tracyites through various community events hosted by the City of Tracy Parks & Recreation. Take a stroll downtown to enjoy one of our Block Parties as music continues throughout the summer season.  Each Block Party takes place at the Front Street Plaza (6th Street & Central Avenue) and embodies a new music genre, food options and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for purchase.

Grab your favorite snack and enjoy a Friday evening with a fun flick! Our Movies on the Plaza Series occurs at our beautiful Civic Center Plaza. All movies are rated PG. Light concessions are available for purchase. Low lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged. Movies begin at sunset. All events are free and suitable for all ages.
